Software Technology Parks of India (STPI)
is an autonomous body under the Department of Information Technology,
Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, Government of
India and acts as a catalyst for software exporters. STPI provides
statutory and regulatory services to the IT/ITES units through STP and
EHTP scheme to promote the Software exports from the country.
STPI acts as a resource center for the member software-exporting units
by offering general infrastructural facilities like ready to use
built-up space, centralized computing facility and High Speed Data
Communication (HSDC). STPI's proactive Single Window Clearance facility
and nation wide presence has helped the STP units to achieve more than
90% of the segment's total turnover in the country, which is considered
as a major contribution to the national goal of being top IT exporter in
the world.

STPI, Kolkata
Software Technology Parks of India, Kolkata is playing a seminal role in
the promotion of IT/ITES exports from the State of West Bengal by
implementing the STP and EHTP scheme.
STPI has already setup four sub-centers in the state at Durgapur,
Siliguri, Haldia and Kharagpur, which are catering to the regulatory as
well as infrastructure needs of the STP units in the region.
STP units in the state have always shown notable growth in export
performance year by year. To take note of some figures the export
performance for 2005-06, 2006-07, 2007-08 have been 2167 cores, 3169
crores and 4150 crores respectively and is expected to cross 4500 crores
for this financial year.
There has been a continual growth of registration under STP scheme by
IT/ITES units. Till date STPI-Kolkata has issued 388 registrations, out
of which 229 units are operational as on date. During current financial
year 22 new IT/ITES units have already registered under the scheme as
against 23 upto the same period during last financial year.
Secondary cities like Durgapur and Siliguri have started to contribute
to the export performance of the state. Having 2 STP units at each
location the STPI centers at Durgapur and Siliguri have shown exports of
617 lakhs and 124 lakhs respectively during last financial year.
The STP units in the state have generated more than 40 thousand direct
employment apart from many thousands other involved indirectly.
The State of West Bengal has been an active participant in the growth of
the IT/ITES sector whether through the STP scheme or the IT/ITES SEZ.
Six IT-SEZs in the State of West Bengal are being taken care by
Development Commissioner, IT/ITES SEZ Eastern Region & Director,
STPI-Guwahati. Out of the Six SEZs, Three are under construction phase
and one has already completed 1st phase of implementation. Seven units
have already been registered as SEZ units under these SEZs. It is
expected that these units will start their operation during the first
half of coming financial year.
